LCBO - Ya the liquor store!

LCBO - gives out the Food & Drink magazine which usually has great! recipes in it. Although i usually have better intentions than action. Which means that i usually go pick up the magazine but don't really get around to making the recipes! ;)

Well.... as it was on the chair beside my couch i looked at the binding on it where it says the title and year and whatnot, i noticed it said "THE ART OF ENTERTAINING"

Which made me think~ ... hmmm .. the art of entertaining .. . this reminds me of those old books and magazines directed towards women to teach them on how to be a good housewife, how to cater to your husband's needs .. and whatever else "how to's" there were in the '50's and around that era.

This magazine i view as being gendered toward women because historically they were the ones to host parties and while those magazine of the '50's "seemed" to have gone away, it is obvious, that they have now taken on a different form.

  1. I think something else to consider is how alcohol is gendered. The first time I drank alcohol, a friend bought it for me. He picked up Smirnoff coolers and some Malibu rum. It's interesting how men's alcohol is "hard" liquor while women's is more adorned and pretty. One of my male friends loves "Sourpuss" and gets a lot of flack for it.

  2. YEAH!! .... thats a great point! ... the "girly" drinks are all the coolers and often very bright or ornate colors. It is not very often i see a man drinking these drinks, is it because they are thought of as not manly, therefore, not emasculating them?

Why is it that they go to the "hard" liquor? (that seems to have such a sexual connotation behind it doesn't it?) Is it because when they (guys?) are introduced to alcohol that they see the men drinking that, therefore they must follow suit to keep up the image of the hard-liquor drinking man?

  3. Yes, it is not that often that we see a guy sitting around a table with a bunch of friends, while everyone is have a beer, or rum and coke he decides to order a martini.... yah right, not saying that it has never happened before, it's just seems very uncommon to see.
